Stuff you should know

“The Little Match Girl” is a short story by Danish poet and author, Hans Christian Andersen. Probably you heard his name when you were a kid. The story, about a dying child’s dreams and hope, was first published in 1845. So classic! It has been adapted to various media, including an animated short film, a television musical, and an animated virtual reality story. Why don’t you have time recalling your childhood by this?

Most terribly cold it was;

it snowed, and was nearly quite dark,

and evening– the last evening of the year.

In this cold and darkness there went along the street a poor little girl, bareheaded, and with naked feet.

When she left home she had slippers on,

it is true; but what was the good of that?

What was once a simple and painless walk through a metal detector has turned into a nightmarish ordeal of screaming Transportation Security Administration agents, invasive pat-downs, naked body scans, and strip searches.

A wide frontier had been laid naked by this unexpected disaster, and more substantial evils were preceded by a thousand fanciful and imaginary dangers.

Presently there was a distant blare of military music; it came nearer, still nearer, and soon a noble cavalcade wound into view, glorious with plumed helmets and flashing mail and flaunting banners and rich doublets and horse-cloths and gilded spear- heads; and through the muck and swine, and naked brats, and joyous dogs, and shabby huts, it took its gallant way, and in its wake we followed.

[Pop song]  Singer : Carpenters    Title : Yesterday once more

?歌詞

When I was young I’d listen to the radio
Waitin’ for my favorite songs
When they played I’d sing along, it made me smile

Those were such happy times and not so long ago
How I wondered where they’d gone
But they’re back again just like a long lost friend
All the songs I loved so well

Every sha-la-la-la
Every wo-o-wo-o, still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling, that they’re startin’ to sing’s, so fine

When they get to the part
Where he’s breakin’ her heart
It can really make me cry, just like before
It’s yesterday once more

Lookin’ back on how it was in years gone by
And the good times that I had
Makes today seem rather sad, so much has changed.

It was songs of love that I would sing to then
And I’d memorize each word
Those old melodies still sound so good to me
As they melt the years away

Every sha-la-la-la
Every wo-o-wo-o, still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling, that they’re startin’ to sing’s so fine

All my best memories come back clearly to me
Some can even make me cry, just like before
It’s yesterday once more

Every sha-la-la-la
Every wo-o-wo-o, still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling, that they’re startin’ to sing’s so fine

Every sha-la-la-la
Every wo-o-wo-o, still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
